A few years ago I made a simple positive change to my bedtime routine that has helped me let go of lingering negative thoughts from the day to enjoy a more peaceful sleep. In my experience, I have found that choosing to take my eyes off of a screen before bed and focusing on short positive statements has had a positive impact on my mind’s readiness for sleep. Studies have shown that the blue light from your cell phone actually suppresses the secretion of melatonin, a key chemical that promotes sleep.

A few years ago I suffered from a form of insomnia that made me feel like I couldn’t sleep until I had accomplished everything I needed to that day. I would go to bed anxious, wrestling with whatever random thoughts my subconscious mind felt like digging up that night. I would spend my time organizing all the things I hadn’t done into a to-do list on my phone that would never end. 

But once I stopped starring at my phone before bed and started using bedtime affirmations, everything changed. I started journaling and writing short positive statements about how much I had accomplished that day, how grateful I am for the day’s experiences, or how excited I am for tomorrow. This mindset shift made it possible for me to fall asleep quicker, which meant I was able to get a longer sleep.

For me, the best way to use bedtime affirmations is to write them in my self care affirmations journal. I keep my own bedtime affirmations journal right next to me and it is the perfect bedside companion! It is the last thing I look at before I go to sleep for the evening and reminds me to stay away from external stimuli like my phone and it’s pesky blue light!
