The best part about life is that it is so full of potential. Each and every day presents you with the opportunity to create the life you want to live.

But, have you ever noticed that, for some reason, it doesn’t always feel this way?

What gets in the way of letting you live life the way you want? And how can you start to create the life you love?

Why You Don’t Create The Life You Want To Live

In a life so full of choice and potential, why is it that we often feel so limited in what we can achieve?

To answer this, take a moment to think about when you were young. You may not have had many responsibilities, but there sure were a pile of rules to follow!

The rules set by your parents were probably the first experience you had with a power that prevented you from doing something that you wanted to do. This was the first time you didn’t have complete control over your life in some way.

Some children listen to the rules without question, while others like to challenge them a bit more. Regardless, the impact that family has can make the influence that ‘the rules’ have over us hard to shake.

And as we get older, we notice that many other factors also want to control what we do with our lives.

Whether it is our parents, friends, schools, or the media, there is no shortage of people telling us what we can and can’t do with our lives. Some mean well, while others have their own motivations.

But, at this point in your life, you don’t need anyone to tell you what your life should look like. You are ready to create the life you want to live on your own!

How to Create The Life You Want To Live

To create the life you want to live, you need to do some reflecting. You will need to cleanse yourself of any influence from others that has made you live your life in a way that you don’t want to.

When we pay too much attention to what people tell us we can’t do, we start to form limiting beliefs about what we are capable of achieving in our own minds.

These limiting beliefs cause us to make up excuses that justify not accomplishing our goals. We then tell ourselves stories that make it easier to stay in our comfort zones rather than taking big risks.

But, in the end, you have the power to fight these limiting beliefs and create the life you love so that you can live life for yourself!

Your life is what you want it to be, and you can do anything you put your mind to. So let’s get into 3 steps you can take to create the life you want to live!

#1. Reflect and Take Stock Of Your Life

The first thing you should do to create the life you want to live is to think hard about where you are in your life right now.

This can be tough because life is pretty complex!

On one hand we have our personal lives and all of the relationships we hold close to us. On the other hand we have to balance a professional life, our finances, and other responsibilities.

If you are going to live life the way you want, you should feel complete control over all of these areas of your life.

This isn’t usually the case though! Life is a balancing act, and when we put too many eggs in one basket, it is easy to drop the ball somewhere else.

So take a moment to reflect and take stock of where you are at in all of the important areas of your life. Are you where you want to be?

Which areas of your life are taking up the most time and energy? Are you happy with the way you are spending your time? Or would you prefer to be spending more time on a different area of your life?

#2. State Your Priorities

After some reflection, you know how you are spending your life. But how do you want to spend your life?

Do you live life the way you want? Or have you lost yourself while balancing all of the responsibilities of your life?

The next step to create the life you want to live is to state how you intend to live life for yourself moving forward.

Are you spending too much time working where you would prefer to spend time with family? Have you made a career decision that has taken over your personal life?

You don’t have to get too carried away with the details of how you plan to create the life you want to live at this stage. That will come later.

This is the time for an honest conversation with yourself about what your priorities are and what you want them to be.

#3. Create a Roadmap of Your Life

After reflecting and setting your priorities, it is time to create a roadmap of your life.

Having a clear vision for how you are going to create the life you want to live is important. This will help keep you focused on making decisions that are aligned with your vision for your life.

This is particularly important when it comes to filtering out opinions that other people have about how to live your life.

A roadmap will also act as a ‘plan’ of sorts. It is a guide to help you through your life that you can refer back to when things get challenging.

Consider making a 5-year vision board of what you want your life to look like. You can include all the important areas of your life (family, work, etc) so that you can map out where you want each to be.

Think of ways that you can integrate your life passions into all that you do. Pursuing the things you love is important if you want to create a life you love.

If you aren’t sure what your passion or purpose are, consider spending some time searching for your ikigai – your reason for being.

Passion has the power to give you a deep sense of meaning and purpose in your life. And it will help you create the life you love!

Hang your vision board in a high-traffic area and let it be your compass. Make decisions in your life that are going to get you to where you want to be in 5 years!

This is arguably the most important step. When we set goals without a plan, our goals turn into wishes – dreams without action.

And taking action is what is going to help you create the life you want to live!

It starts with taking ownership over your life by reflecting on your limiting beliefs and how they have impacted what you believe you are capable of doing with your life.
