You Can Do Anything You Put Your Mind To (Start Believing It Now!)
You, and only you, have to power to choose who you want to be and how you will show up in this life. Do you intend to be the person who lives their life full of grit, determination, and perseverance? The person who fully encompasses the power of a growth mindset? This is the person who believes that you can do anything you put your mind to.
However, you also have the choice to be a negative person who lacks optimism. A person that allows fear to control their life, and doesn’t have a bone of motivation in their body. This is the person who wouldn’t dare believe or agree that you can do anything you put your mind to.
The Role of Your Limiting Beliefs
The approach we take to our confidence in ourselves depends on many factors. One of the biggest is the way our families approach growth and goals. I grew up in a family where I was constantly told that I can do anything I put my mind to. I always believed this to be true and never challenged this idea. Believing that I can do anything I put my mind to was such an absolute truth for me that I just assumed that everyone believed this about themselves. That was until I married my spouse.
When my husband and I first got married, it wasn’t long before I realized how much more I believed in my ability to do anything. My husband’s family made a habit out of pointing out the flaws in plans and goals. For example, “you can’t do that because you don’t have enough money”, or “you aren’t old enough to do that” were frequent statements that were used in his home. As a result of these messages, my husband tends to have a few limiting beliefs about what he is capable of, none of which are true!
It didn’t take long for us to realize that we didn’t share the same confidence in our ability to do anything. However, it also didn’t take long for us to get on the same page. My belief that I can do anything I put my mind to helped us reach big, crazy, value-driven goals. Once we started reaching our goals, my husband had no choice but to change his mindset. He was able to tangibly see evidence that you can do anything you put your mind to.
Do You Believe That You Can Do Anything You Set Your Mind To?
Are you someone who doesn’t believe that you can do anything you put your mind to? If so, I encourage you to take the time to really dig in and think about why you believe this.
Was this something your parents used to say in your home growing up? Did you ever hear a teacher or friend say it? Perhaps you heard it and simply brushed it off as an old cliché that was complete nonsense.
For many people with limiting beliefs about themselves, their response is something sarcastic. For example, “I’m not a bird, I’m pretty sure I can’t grow wings no matter how hard I wish for them”. Let’s get one thing straight here. I’m not telling you that you can transcend the laws of science and physics if you put your mind to it. Obviously you can’t grow wings.
However, this doesn’t mean you can’t set big and crazy goals for your life! No sensible person is going to put their mind to becoming a bird and growing wings. Sensible people understand that they are required to set their mind to aspirations within the realm of possibility. Sensible people are those who believe that you can do anything you put your mind to, and achieve greatness in their lives because of this belief.
You will find that the people who don’t believe that you can do anything you put your mind to will try to throw ridiculous and untrue statements at you. These types of people will hang onto whatever reason they can to excuse themselves from achieving greatness.
Growth vs. Fixed Mindset
Your mindset plays an incredibly important role in your life. A growth mindset allows you to embrace challenges, persevere through failure, and put forth the effort needed to find success in life.
By contrast, a fixed mindset will keep you grounded where you are at in life, believing the limiting beliefs you’ve been telling yourself for years. A fixed mindset will make you want to avoid challenges and giving up easily. Choose to look at every situation that happens in your life through a growth mindset perspective rather than a fixed mindset one.
Your Mind, Your Mindset
Your mind is an incredibly powerful place. The only thing that will ever stand in your way is you. Your mind is what is or isn’t stopping you from pursuing grit, determination, motivation, perseverance, and self-discipline as a means of chasing your wildest dreams.
Your mindset is the exact reason why people believe or don’t believe that you can do anything your mind to. You see, people who choose a life of normalcy, complacency, and mediocracy are too scared to fail. They are too scared to announce the big crazy dreams they have for their lives. Instead, they live their lives feeling stuck in their comfort zones, destined for a life of daily monotonous repetition.
But guess what? The time that makes up your life is going to pass anyway. Not only is tomorrow not guaranteed, but you can’t get the time you’ve been wasting back. This is why motivation is so important!
Remember this when you decide if you can do anything you set your mind to. Your limiting beliefs aren’t true and failure is necessary for great success. You matter and the amazing things that you can do in your life are what matters. Your mindset is what will determine whether you jump out of bed everyday to strive for greatness, or whether you drag your butt out of bed every day and aim to just survive the ordinary. The choice is yours. But at the end of the day, if you tackle your mindset, you can do anything you set your mind to.
Setting your mindset doesn’t mean try something once, fail, and give up either. It doesn’t mean be lazy. It means if you truly want something in your life, then you need to use your grit to persevere through every trial and tribulation. Show up time and time again. If you want something bad enough, you set your mind to it and you never give up. Don’t settle, take responsibility for your mind, take responsibility for your life.
This isn’t something that is always easy. My family works hard every day to remind one another that we can do anything we put our minds to. To help with this, we hang these posters on our living room wall in our home. These quotes have become family mottos. They help remind us of the power we hold over what we are capable of.
You Are Capable of Greatness
Ultimately, the truth is this. Not only can you accomplish hard things, but you can do anything you put your mind to. There is no one in this world who is going to care about your goals and dreams as much as you do. No one will ever push you to reach those crazy audacious goals in your mind that you keep silent out of fear of failure. You can’t rely on other people to push you to become a better version of yourself.
You, and only you, are in complete control of your life. How will you show up today? How will you show up tomorrow? You are capable of greatness, and you are capable of being the best version of yourself. You are capable of being a better you tomorrow than you were today. And you can do anything you put your mind to. Be a blessing in this often dark world and shine your light. Be the best you can be. Focus your mind on the incredible things you can do, and don’t ever give up.
Don’t forget to share this post with your friends and family on social media! If you know someone who you think would benefit from a reminder that they can do great things, this post could be the motivation that they need!
