How to Stop Having a Bad Attitude (In 5 Easy Steps)

Are your days filled with negative thoughts, negative feelings, and a negative attitude? Are you ready to take control of your life again and learn how to stop having a bad attitude?

Whether it is caused by stressful situations, or it has been an ongoing theme throughout your life, a bad attitude makes it hard to appreciate the good things that you have in your life.

If you are here, you are probably aware that you could use some attitude changes in your life. Perhaps your family members or even team members at work have recently pointed out your attitude to you.

If this is the case, you have completed the first step in how to stop having a bad attitude! The first step is just showing up, taking ownership, and having a willingness to find a positive attitude.

Learning how to stop having a bad attitude can be hard, unless you have a good attitude about it! So get excited, because we are starting right now!

What Is A Bad Attitude?

If you are someone who has had a negative attitude for a large portion of your life, the first thing you need to do is make sure that you check your expectations. Having unrealistic expectations is just a recipe for a disaster with a bad attitude!

Developing a positive attitude is not an overnight fix. People who have good attitudes constantly have to make the conscious effort not to let a bad day ruin their positive thinking.

While it is okay to have a bad day once in a while, remember that developing positive thinking is something that you need to work at on a regular basis. However, it will make a significant impact on your day to day life, so it is worth it!

5 Easy Steps: How to Stop Having a Bad Attitude

Let’s get into these 5 easy steps to overcome your negative attitude and turn it into a positive attitude – for good!

#1. Use Positive Language

If you truly want to start experiencing positive changes in your attitude, the first step is to use language that matches a positive outlook.

Remember the age-old saying: “if you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything at all.” Imagine what the world would be like if more people applied this to their daily lives!

Now, this isn’t to say that you shouldn’t speak up if you are truly unhappy with something in your life. We are all human beings after all.

However, if you are going to speak only to say something rude, disrespectful, or mean-spirited, then instead, choose to not speak at all! Or better yet, choose to turn your automatic thoughts of negativity into a more positive comment.

Lastly, instead of complaining when things don’t go your way, try to express yourself in a different way. Aim to use positive language to describe your negative experiences instead of complaining.

For example: instead of complaining about how much you hate your job, consider something like “my job frustrates me. I am looking for work that challenges me more”.

Notice that this sets you up to take action. It puts you in control and gives you the power to change your circumstances!

#2. Change Your Mindset

Sometimes, a poor attitude comes from a negative mindset.

Your mindset is what controls how you react to everything in your life. This includes positive and negative experiences. There are many different types of mindsets, some positive and some negative.

People with a negative mindset tend to have a negative outlook on all things. Even positive experiences tend to be looked at in a negative light.

A negative mindset also means that you tend to experience more negative emotions and thoughts than positive thoughts or emotions.

All of this negativity adds up to a bad attitude! So what can you do to change it?

Well, the good news is, your mindset is something that you can learn to take control of!

A growth mindset is a thinking pattern that you can use to start seeing the growth opportunities in your life.

Next time you are faced with a challenge or a defeat, rather than letting it affect your attitude, try something different. Ask yourself what you can learn from the experience. Dig in and find the growth opportunities.

You can turn a bad day around very quickly by focusing in on how you can grow from it!

#3. Practice Gratitude

Expressing gratitude tends to be an area of growth for negative people. If you have a tendency to see things in a negative light, the odds are that gratitude doesn’t come easy to you.

But, hunting for and expressing gratitude regularly is one of the good habits you can practice that can cure an attitude problem!

In fact, if you are wondering how to stop having a bad attitude, this is probably the best way to do it!

You don’t have to be one of those optimistic people who find the best in everything to express gratitude. The easiest way is to just stop what you are doing right now and think of something you are thankful for in your life.

Set an alarm on your phone for every hour. Each time it goes off, take some time to think about what you are grateful for. Before long, it will become second nature and you will notice your attitude improving.

#4. Surround Yourself with Positive People

Positive people are great! They have a positive outlook on everything, they share positive thoughts, and they make you a better person overall when you spend time with them.

So surrounding yourself with positive people is a good suggestion if you want to ditch your bad attitude!

But, here is one caution. Bad attitudes are contagious! Depending on just how bad your attitude is, you could end up being a drain on the positive people around you.

However, once you have tried a few things on this list, spending time with positive people is only going to make it easier to ditch your bad attitude!

Another thing you can do to help is spend less time with negative people. These are the types of people who are only going to validate your negative thoughts and negative feelings.

We all have those people in our lives who always have something negative to say. Aim to spend less time with those people, while also making sure you aren’t one of them!

#5. Change Your Lifestyle

One of the most powerful things to try when learning how to stop having a bad attitude is to change your lifestyle.

Your attitude is always a choice. However, it can be easier to make attitude changes if you have a lifestyle that supports a positive attitude.

Depending on your situation, you could find that your lifestyle is contributing to your bad attitude.

For example, before I quit my teaching job, a bad attitude was just part of my lifestyle! I was working long and demanding hours, and never seemed to have enough time for myself or my family.

Exercise and healthy eating weren’t a priority, and I was overall just miserable!

However, since I left teaching and pursued work that I love, I have been able to focus on maintaining a heathy mindset. I have worked hard to build a lifestyle that prioritizes growth and gratitude.

Sure, there are times where my bad attitude takes over, but I have come a long way just by changing my lifestyle!

It is Time to Stop Having a Bad Attitude!

There are many reasons why you could have a bad attitude. But, at the end of the day, only you have the power to change it!

If you have struggled with a bad attitude throughout your life, switching to a positive attitude won’t be an easy fix. However, you are taking the first step by taking ownership over your attitude and showing a willingness to learn how to stop having a bad attitude.

And it will be worth it! People with a positive attitude are happier and healthier and tend to be more successful! As the saying goes, your attitude determines your altitude!

After some work, you will get back to enjoying the positive things that you have in your life. Let them remind you of the importance of a positive attitude and a grateful heart.

And enjoy where your life takes you when you have a positive attitude!
